Kim Yu-Seon

Kim Yeong-Hee
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a checklist for therapists during their self-monitoring of play therapy. In total, 209 questions were selected based on earlier work on relevant topics and were grouped into five categories and fifteen subcategories to devise the checklist. The section entitled 'joining with the child' was divided into three subcategories: understanding cases, positive emotional experiences, and setting limitations. 'Response skills during play' were classified into the two subcategories of nonverbal response skills and verbal response skills. The subcategories of the section entitled 'dealing with resistance' were silence and resistance with withdrawal, behavioral resistance, and skills for dealing with resistance. 'Dealing with transference and counter-transference' consisted of the subcategories of transference, internal counter-transference, external counter-transference, and dealing with counter-transference, while the area entitled 'child¡¯s adaptation' was made up of child¡¯s progress on adaption, skills of helping child to adapt, and termination signals. We also used a validity index (CVI) devised by an expert group. In conclusion, 132 items in five therapeutic areas with 15 subcategories on the checklist were designed for therapists to use during their self-monitor activities during the play therapy process in an integrated model. Here, each theory is integrated to deal with children¡¯s emotions, cognition, and behaviors. Moreover, novice play therapists can be provided with guidance on areas to examine to improve their skills as a play therapist and how better to respond to a child.
